Oldest "Mauna Lani" Green Turtle Found
Since 1989 the Mauna Lani Hotel has been raising endangered sea turtles in the salt water ponds at the hotel. Recently,a large sea turtle was discovered at Kaoloko-Honokohau National Historic Park.  It was released way back in 1999 at the annual Turtle Independence Day. This honu is about 14 yrs old and weighs 267 lbs. This is the oldest of the 160 juvenile honu raised by the Mauna Lani to be found surviving on its own.

When they have grown to a size and weight that are deemed appropriate for release into the wild and they are set free. Every July 4th of July is designated “turtle independence day” and large crowds of people gather at the Mauna Lani Hotel to celebrate their freedom.
